April President’s Column

Mentoring program is valued AFP benefit for members

“Do not wait for leaders; do it alone, person to person.” ~ Mother Teresa

AFP Triangle’s Mentoring program kicked off last month. We have the largest number in the program since it launched several years ago – 16 pairs and over 30 participants. Special thanks to our Mentoring co-chairs April Anthony and Angela Georgalis, who are leading this year’s program. I also appreciate our mentors who are taking the time out of their busy schedules to provide advice and direction to newcomers in the field. This is a powerful way to give back to our profession, and I challenge all senior development officers to become involved in this program. As Albert Pine stated, “What we have done for ourselves alone dies with us. What we have done for others and the world remains and is immortal.”

Another way AFP is reaching out to newcomers in the profession is by the Speed Mentoring event offered to members and all those in the field on Tuesday, April 26 at the NC Bar Association in Cary. This two hour free event, open to all, offers a chance to obtain one-on-one advice in short time blocks for direction on many aspects of fundraising. Christine Grant is leading this event and plans to hold another one in September. Click here to sign up. If you cannot become a mentor this year, but still wish to help, contact our Mentoring chairs and share your expertise during the Mentoring Express. I have participated in these sessions several times over the years and found them to be stimulating and rewarding.

MaryBeth Carpenter is President of the AFP Triangle Chapter, and Chief Library Fundraising Strategist for the NCSU Libraries.
