Call for Candidates: Director of Development and Community Engagement
The Healing Place of New Hanover County – Wilmington, North Carolina
(Note: The successful candidate will be expected to live and work in or near New Hanover County, NC)
ABOUT THE HEALING PLACE OF NEW HANOVER COUNTY
The Healing Place of New Hanover County (THPNHC) is an independent nonprofit (501 c 3) organization opening in Wilmington, North Carolina in mid-2022, the newest replication of a nationally recognized nonprofit recovery program for men and women, The Healing Place (THP). Founded in 1989 in Louisville, Kentucky, THP has been a model that has been used to create similar but independent nonprofits in eighteen rural and urban locations in Kentucky, Virginia, and North Carolina. Today, there
are three closely aligned affiliates who operate under the management of The Healing Place: our headquarters in Louisville and another site in Campbellsville, Kentucky, plus a third now set to open in Wilmington, NC.; all three provide services at no cost to the clients in order to ensure as few barriers to recovery as possible. For more than 30 years, THP has followed an unwavering mission to reach individuals suffering from drug and alcohol addiction, provide the tools for recovery, and restore meaningful and productive lives.
THP uses a four-stage model involving an innovative peer-to-peer model: Non-medical Detox, Motivational Track, Recovery Stage, and Transitional Services. Historically, leaders in New Hanover County have been working diligently to assist people in their community who are suffering from alcoholism and drug addiction. Their research to find a best-in-class recovery program led them to identify The Healing Place in Louisville, Kentucky as a model. In 1998, The Healing Place was recognized as a “Model That Works” by the United States Department of Health and Human Services. The success rates of the model are consistent from program to program due to the foundation and the basic core elements remaining consistent. The long-term social model provides clients with a safe and stable environment, peer accountability, and education about the disease of addiction. Most importantly, the application of the model takes place with true compassion and empathy for all clients. When it opens in mid-2022, the service area for THPNHC will include Wilmington and New Hanover County, NC and the 16 surrounding counties of North Carolina’s Eastern Region. Once THPNHC is in full operation, it will have a budget of approximately $3M with a staff of 100 serving 200 clients annually. This new, critically needed service will be a force for good in North Carolina and we now seek to recruit the team to lead THPNHC in preparation, launch and funding of this newest affiliate of a nationally renowned benchmark of excellence in compassionate and effective care.
THE OPPORTUNTY
The Director of Development and Community Engagement will be a senior leader working with the Executive Director to encourage philanthropy, build community awareness, and manage the organizational brand and community footprint for The Healing Place of New Hanover County. With early “best practice” guidance from experienced THP central office staff in Kentucky, the Director will be responsible for planning, creating, and implementing successful programs for both fundraising and community awareness-building activities that will drive essential revenue sources in both philanthropy and client services. Although the initial cost of construction and start-up operations will not require a major capital campaign or fundraising at first, we forecast that annual cash philanthropy for operations will require $750K or more by Fiscal Year 2024-25. Therefore, from the start the Director will oversee the planning of a first-ever fund development program that grows thoughtfully but steadily, integrating
major gifts, annual giving, corporate/foundation relations, prospect management, stewardship, planned gifts, stewardship/gift accounting, and special events. In the first year, we also expect the Director to create and execute a Strategic Plan for building Community Awareness and working with Executive Director, senior team, and Board to engage civic/political leaders, healthcare leaders, service partners, and health navigators, who can ensure that individuals who need THPNHC services are quickly identified and referred for enrollment at THPNHC. In time, the Director will be expected to accommodate the growth of his/her department with additional staffing and resources as needed to assure sustainable, renewable annual gifts, grow an endowment, and prepare for future capital expansion.
