The Food Bank of Central & Eastern North Carolina is the oldest and largest hunger relief organization in North Carolina. The Food Bank serves a network of more than 800 partner agencies such as soup kitchens, food pantries, shelters, and programs for children and adults through branch offices in Durham, Greenville, New Bern, Raleigh, the Sandhills (Southern Pines), and Wilmington. We serve 34 counties and distributed 42.5 million pounds of food in fiscal year 2011.
We are seeking a Vice President of Development to lead its Development Department and to plan strategically its annual campaigns, capital campaigns, endowment campaigns, planned and deferred giving, public relations, grants, foundations, marketing, social media, and external communications fundraising initiatives.
We are looking for a passionate, dynamic, and articulate professional with demonstrated success managing an annual revenue campaign of at least $10 million in a nonprofit environment.
This position reports to the President & CEO of the Food Bank. This position is based in Raleigh and will require in-state local travel.

Job Description
Job Title: Vice President of Development
Classification: Fulltime, Exempt
Department: Development
Reports to: President & CEO
Basic function: This position will serve as a key member of the Food Bank’s executive team and will lead all aspects of fund development for the rapidly growing organization: annual campaigns, capital campaigns, endowment campaigns, planned and deferred giving, public relations, marketing, social media, journalism, and external communications. The incumbent will serve as spokesperson for the Food Bank in the absence of the President/CEO. As a member of the executive team, the VP of Development will identify and influence connectivity between all Food Bank branches and external constituencies.
Resource Acquisition Responsibilities:
- Provide top-level thinking, analysis, and recommendations to the Board of Directors and the President & CEO regarding fund development.
- Create and follow best-practices for non-profit development.
- Facilitate the annual fund drives of the Food Bank and create success in reaching financial targets. Gain/earn the full support of a cadre of volunteers and professional staff.
- Develop annual productivity goals with input from the Development Committee of the Board of Directors and the President & CEO.
- Create written plans for each revenue line and track/report on an ongoing basis.
- Integrate concepts of high-level communications and marketing to develop strategy and to implement/execute comprehensive development planning.
- Develop performance goals for all personnel in the Development Department.
- Direct the activities and evaluate the performance Development Department staff.
- Develop performance goals and evaluate the performance of the Director of the Wilmington Branch and the Director of the Sandhills Branch. Coordinate closely with the VP of Operations & IT, the VP of Agency Services & Programs, the Director of Human Resources, and the Director of Finance.
- Establish comprehensive and strategic plans for all fundraising campaigns.
- Utilize public relations outreach activities to grow and maintain a current media and marketing plan that significantly enhances the Food Bank’s recognition in the 34 counties it serves. Enhance/improve these outreach activities.
- Utilize Board members and the Development Committee to strategically align the Food Bank with a wider corporate pool of prospects. Develop and maintain such lists for tracking and analysis.
- Develop structures and mechanisms for sharing contact information.
- Improve the community branding and image of the Food Bank.
- Establish comprehensive work plans with Development Department team members, keeping them motivated and focused in securing upgraded gifts to the annual fund with appropriate volunteer staffing. Ensure appropriate evaluation of these efforts and success of the annual campaign.
- Continue to strengthen annual fundraising plan by maximizing the existing donor base as well as cultivate new donors.
- Provide oversight and strategic direction of (1) the direct mail program, (2) foundation and corporate grant-writing, tracking and evaluation, (3) quarterly newsletter production with response functionality, and (4) an annual report of contributors to the Food Bank.
- Ensure updated Food Bank information is readily accessible.
- Establish metrics for measuring Special Events to determine returns and efficiencies. Ensure all events are well planned and executed.
- Work collaboratively with the Development Committee Chair and President & CEO to engage Development Committee members and to maximize their potential.
- Staff Regional Councils where relevant. Ensure Development Staff is engaging Council members and is strategically recruiting and developing regional fundraising initiatives.
- As a key member of the Executive Management Team, demonstrate and encourage organizational values at all times. Ensure performance management tools and orientations are utilized in a constructive and timely manner for the Development Department.
- Perform other duties or responsibilities as required by the President & CEO.
Supervision exercised: Direct Development Department staff of 8-10 individuals.
Qualifications/education: Minimum of a four-year bachelor’s degree in Public Relations, Marketing, Journalism or Communications is required. An MPA, MBA or Masters of Social Service Administration degree or the equivalent is greatly preferred.
Qualifications/experience: A minimum of 15 years of progressively responsible experience in fundraising and public relations in the non-profit sector is required. Must be a self-starter with a proven track record of successful fundraising, media relations, social media, and newsletter writing, editing and production. Planned giving experience is required. Successful and development/fundraising production-oriented senior level leadership experience required. Demonstrated successful experience fundraising in a growing and sprawling organization.
